Recording playback

Turn a terminal session into something people can explore. Keep the commands, colors, and timing, then replay the useful moments at your own pace.

Have a recording?

Open a shared recording or a file saved on your computer.

Local .tbt v1 files stay in your browser. Encrypted recordings need the complete sharing link.

Formats and limits

Local playback supports 1 GiB expanded data; sharing, transcripts, and offline exports have 64 MiB limits. Recover journals with the CLI first. Read the format reference

More than a video of your terminal

01 / EXPLORE

Find your moment

Pause, seek, jump five seconds, or step one event at a time. Change speed, shorten idle pauses, and loop a section. Enable Remember playback position in settings to return with Resume / Start over.

02 / SHARE

Share the right moment

Copy a link at the current timestamp, or embed a unencrypted recording. Recording details stay directly below the terminal while the controls stay within reach.

03 / TAKE IT WITH YOU

Keep it useful anywhere

Download a self-contained offline player, .tbt, or text. Export a short session as a GIF or WebM, or share a link at the exact moment that matters.

Make your first recording

  1. Install the CLI

Follow the installation guide, then open your usual terminal.

  2. Record something worth keeping

Run the command below and work in the shell it opens. Type exit when you are finished.

termbacktime record --output demo.tbt --title "My first recording"

Without --output, recordings go into ~/termbacktime/recordings/. Find them with termbacktime list.

  3. Play it back

Open the local player and choose demo.tbt, or replay it directly in your terminal:

    termbacktime play demo.tbt
